Overcoming disabilities

Academy Award winning actress, author and producer, Marlee Maitlin, stated recently at a Society for Human Resource Management Diversity conference that she “relishes the challenges I face every day.” Matlin said her success was “all about determination.” Matlin, who has been deaf since she was 18 months old talked about how the real handicap of deafness is not in the ear; it lies in the mind. Her message is that we can all achieve much more in overcoming barriers if we focus on our abilities rather than dwelling on perceived disabilities.
