Recognition for a Liberal Arts Education
In this age of specialization, employers are beginning to recognize the importance of a liberal arts education. According to Career Pro News (July 4, 2008), there is a demand for liberal arts-educated individuals. A liberal arts education makes an individual well-rounded and sharpens critical thinking skills, which is important in any career.
Are You an Immigrant in New York City applying for college?
The New York Daily News (March 19, 2008) reported on a New York State organization that helps immigrants through the college application process. The
New York State Leadership Council is a three-year old Manhattan-based group that works with young immigrants. According to the report, this group meets with students, gets feedback and provides workshops specific to their needs. The group is headed by two relatively recent immigrants, Walter Barrientos and Cristina Jiminiez.
Checking Out Colleges?
According to the January 2008 issue of Money magazine, students and parents should check out colleges first on the College Navigator from the National Center for Education Statistics at nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator. While there are several other good sites to investigate the best college for you or your child, many request a lot of personal information. On this website, you can categorize your search by location, public or private college and major, and you will find a list of colleges and a full listing of their tuition, financial aid, admissions and graduation rate. High Demand for College Grads in the Workplace
According to the 2008 HR Trendbook, a publication of the Society for Human Resource Management, there is an increasing demand for college grads to fill jobs. In an article entitled, "Class of '08 Expecting High Demand" by Theresa Minton-Eversole, employers are expected to increase their hiring of new college graduates this year and in the coming years. Most of the increased hiring is being seen in the service sector and manufacturing. College grads are also seeing increases in salary offers across many disciplines.

College Cost Reduction Act
President Bush signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 at the end of September, 2007. This act increases the funding for Pell Grants, and provides an interest rate cut on subsidized Stafford loans for undergraduates. These are the most common loans for financing college tuition.
